What materials can you make?
Decorative butterflies on the walls can be found on sale in many stores - already cut, equipped with fasteners, completely ready for gluing. Volumetric ones are made from plastic, paper, wood.
Don't want a voluminous decoration? Look for flat vinyl decals on sale. Non-standard option fluttering insects - plastic with a mirror finish.
Homemade butterflies are made mainly from offset or colored paper. Using a stencil and scissors, it is easy to make many solid or multi-colored shapes. Bright paper butterflies have one significant drawback - they are short-lived, they are afraid of water, they are easily torn.
To cover most of the shortcomings, it is enough to replace the paper with thin, but durable cardboard.
Butterflies made of paper can not only be cut but also folded... How to make origami butterflies correctly, look below in the "How to do it yourself" section.
Advice! Lovers of boho, retro, Provence can decorate the wall with butterflies made from the pages of old books.
Volumetric butterflies on the wall can be made from any available means:
- polymer clay,
- foamiran,
- self-hardening porcelain,
- vinyl records,
- old disks,
- fabrics.
Choose material that you know how and love to work with.
How to arrange it nicely?
Before proceeding with wall decoration butterflies, decide on the color, size, amount of interior decor:
- The shade of butterflies in the interior should contrast with the color of the walls... For plain surfaces, colored figures are suitable, black will fit into a light monochrome design, for a room in bright colors, choose white.
- Decorative interior items should fit the style... Laconic black or white for high-tech, carved gold for the classics.
- Panel of butterflies on the wall should be proportionate... The smaller the room, the less overall the insects themselves with wings make the applique.
You can arrange butterflies on the wall in different ways, but chaotic gluing is unlikely to look interesting. therefore choose one of 4 shapes:
- Expanding line... Many butterflies seem to fly away from one point. At the same time, you can use figures of the same size everywhere or increase them as the strip expands. The line is pre-drawn with a pencil on the wall - straight or curved. The beginning is left as it is, or it is decorated with a container from which the fluttering beetles will fly out: a mug, a watch, a basket, a vase.
- A circle... The symbolic circle in the center is left empty, and beautiful lionfish are attached around. The composition will fit perfectly on the wall above the sofa, bed, fireplace, table.
- Vortex... Wall decoration with butterflies is done in a spiral - in the center the line is narrower, outside it is wider.
- Figure... Elements are often arranged in a specific pattern: from small figures, you can create a large heart.
How can you fix it to the wall?
Making butterflies - only 50% success, the resulting figures need to be fixed on the wall. A suitable method is chosen depending on the wall covering and the desired durability of the decor:
- Double sided tape... A reliable option - just cut a square of the desired size, stick it on the butterfly, remove the protective layer, press it against the wall. Less scotch tape - it will be almost impossible to remove it from the wall. Therefore, the method is suitable only for the "eternal" painting of butterflies on the wall, which will be removed along with the wallpaper. Alternatively, look in stores for duct tape marked “easy to remove from wall”.
- Glue... PVA or Moment is used either for "eternal" compositions, or for gluing to a base that separates the wall from insects. Otherwise, use an adhesive like Blu Tack - it is suitable for all surfaces, is easy to remove, can be reused.
- Tailor's pin, pushpin... In some cases, decorative heads of buttons or pins will serve as an additional decoration - for example, imitating the head or eyes of an insect. The pins work best for cork or wood substrates, but they can also be inserted into the wallpaper.
- The composition does not need to be fixed to the wall... To look airy, they are hung on a chandelier or curtain with a thread, fishing line.
How to do it yourself: 4 microns
You can buy butterflies for decorating at the store, but you can make them yourself. Especially if you have some free time and little helpers.
From paper
You will need thick paper or flexible cardboard (glossy, matte), a pencil, scissors.
1. First of all, decide on a template - you can draw it yourself, take one of the ones below or find a suitable one on the Internet.
Important! Avoid too small parts - they are not easy to cut.
2. Prepare one stencil or several in different sizes... Place them on the blank sheets, trace along the contour.
3. Drawings will remain cut, make a crease (mark the fold line), attach on the wall.
Origami
If the idea of a long cut is embarrassing, fold it! For origami, take paper, cut into squares of any size and get to work following the detailed diagram.
Polymer clay
Take the clay itself, a baking dish of the desired silhouette, any suitable thread.
1. We roll out a layer, 4-5 mm thick, cut out the figures, make 4 holes in the center (like on a button). For baking, the blanks are placed on something voluminous, giving the wings the desired shape in advance.
2. After cooling, a thread is inserted into the holes, a knot is tied from the inside - for it they are attached to a pin or an adhesive mass.
From fabric
For work, you can take felt, which already holds its shape perfectly, or ordinary fabric (cotton, linen, gabardine). In the first case, it is enough to simply cut it out. In the second, you can go in two ways:
- Fold with origami fabric, secure with stitches.
- Cut out butterflies, put on a bulk base, coat with PVA. Work like papier-mâché. When the blanks are dry, the bugs will hold the wings perfectly.
How do they look in the interior of the rooms?
Most often you can see butterflies on the wall of the nursery - this is an excellent option for a girl's room... A realistic effect is achieved through volumetric products, an artistic one - with the help of stickers or drawings.
Color solution - from bright to plain, pastel. Depending on the child's hobbies, you can make a decor from book pages, music records.
Butterflies are also used in the living room: with their help, they decorate an empty wall above the sofa or opposite it. Ideal to complement 3D figures with LED lighting: the light contributes to the creation of a dramatic atmosphere.
Adult bedroom composition decorate the wall above the bed: but if the girl likes this option, then it is better to discuss this issue with the man living in the room in advance.
In the kitchen, butterflies stand out dining area: a swirl of wings above the table in combination with a chandelier or sconce will look original. To create a feeling of filling the space, plant several copies on cabinet doors, lamps, refrigerator.
A swarm of butterflies looks original at the entrance to the house - decorations on the walls literally indicate directions to different rooms. It seems as if they just flew from the street and spread throughout the apartment.
Original design ideas
Butterflies are good on their own, but for a more interesting result, use ready-made ideas:
- Framed... You will need a few cut out butterflies of different shapes and a few frames: such an entomological collection looks no worse than a real one, but not a single insect will suffer.
- Add meaning to your composition... For example, planting a cat from below that hunts for winged insects.
- Design an unusual figure... Collect a large butterfly, breaking up into small ones. Or leave an empty heart with paper lionfish tightly planted around it.
- Play with color... Create a gradient from bright to white or make smooth transitions between shades - from blue to green, yellow, orange, red.
- Add flowers... In nature, butterflies are most often surrounded by flowering plants: why not take advantage of this idea of real harmony? Flowers are glued to a vertical surface mixed with butterflies or a vase with them is placed in the base.
