Choosing the right location
The first thing to rely on when choosing a decoration is the type of wall decoration. If the room is painted with solid paint or faced with decorative plaster, the wall will be an excellent backdrop for a bright accent in the form of an image.
If the room or kitchen is covered with wallpaper with a colorful pattern, we do not recommend placing a picture from the modules: it will get lost among the prints and overload the situation. Alternatively, you can choose a composition from black and white images.
A picture of several components looks harmonious if placed at the correct height - this is about 165 cm from the floor along the bottom edge. We do not recommend placing the decor "by eye": all dimensions must be verified using a level.
If you place the composition at the head of the bed, above a chest of drawers or a table, then its width should be at least half the length of this object. It is advisable to place exactly in the center. If you hang the triptych above the sofa, it can take up 2/3 of the backrest length.
It is also necessary to take into account the gaps between the elements: the larger the fragments, the further they should be located from each other. The optimal distance is from 2 to 4 cm: this will ensure the integrity of the composition.
If the room is small or cluttered with furniture, you cannot hang huge modular paintings. If you need to visually stretch the ceiling, you can place the fragments vertically. The horizontal arrangement, on the contrary, will expand the room.
There are two ways to hang a modular picture:
- using fasteners without drilling
- or using self-tapping screws with dowels, for which holes are needed in the wall.
Depending on the material from which the walls are made, you will need either a drill or a hammer drill. Before you hang a modular picture, we advise you to collect its fragments on the floor and measure the distance between them.
A composition of three elements is called a triptych, of five - a penaptych. If there are more details, this is a polyptych. The central part of the triptych serves as the main reference point when placing a triptych, and for a penaptych, if it consists of different images, there are many layout options.
In order to fix the modules on the wall, you need at least one hole for each piece. Since the composition can be heavy, the fasteners must be secure.
Mounting options without drilling
You can hang a picture without nails and screws using modern fixtures that are easy to find in construction hypermarkets and online stores. When fixing fragments, it is important to take into account the weight and material from which the picture is made, as well as the surface on which the elements are attached.
Pins, buttons or needles
The cheapest and easiest way to hang an inexpensive modular picture. To prevent the canvases from falling, they must be weightless - with a cardboard or expanded polystyrene base. A suitable option if the room is decorated with wallpaper or cork. Pins and buttons are also suitable for placing paintings on a painted drywall wall.
Step-by-step instruction:
- We lay out the parts of the picture on the floor, compose the composition and measure the distance between the modules.
- Having determined the position on the wall, we outline the central segment with a simple pencil - it will be easier to erase it.
- We fasten the elements parallel to each other, piercing them with a tip and fixing them on the wall.
Double sided tape
This is an adhesive tape impregnated with an adhesive and protected with a film. The mount is only suitable for light modular paintings.
How to glue the decoration to the wall:
- We cut the tape into several strips about 10 cm long. Each element will require at least 4 pieces.
- Remove the film from one side and press it firmly against the frame or subframe, grasping the corners.
- We remove the protective film from the back side, quickly and accurately press the module against the previously marked wall.
Double-sided adhesive tape holds objects well on wallpaper, decorative plaster and painted putty, but it is better to refuse such fasteners if the surface is covered with wallpaper with a textured pattern. After dismantling, the double-sided tape leaves noticeable marks on the surface, which become dirty over time.
Liquid Nails
This is a durable composition that reliably fixes the product after drying. It is important to make sure the wall is well leveled before installation.
How to hang a modular painting on the wall using liquid nails:
- Place the painting element face down.
- We distribute liquid nails throughout the frame.
- Press the fragment onto the previously marked surface: while the glue is not dry, the module can be moved and aligned. Remains of the composition must be removed immediately.
This option is suitable for bathroom decor. Unfortunately, it is impossible to remove the composition planted on liquid nails without damaging the base - noticeable traces will remain from the glue.
Velcro fastening
Such a system, presented by the firms "Kreps" and "Command", is a universal tool suitable for almost any surface: concrete, plastic, wood, glass. Thin wallpapers are not included in this list - they may not support the weight of heavy frames.
You need to fix modular paintings in the following sequence:
- We visually determine the location of the paintings, make markings.
- We clean the wall, and, if necessary, degrease it.
- Separate the strips from each other, press the two fasteners until they click.
- Turn the paintings face down. Remove one of the green backings and attach the fasteners to the frame. The kit must be positioned around the perimeter 2/3 from the upper edge of the frame.
- We remove the last backing and fix the picture on the wall, holding it for 30 seconds.
The Command system allows even massive modular paintings to be placed on the wall. The mount leaves no residue after dismantling. In order to get rid of the Velcro, you need to slowly pull the strip along the surface.

Mount spider
This is a simple, but reliable and practical fastener for modular paintings, made of plastic. In its round part there are thin metal studs that easily fit into wood, drywall and brick, but with difficulty - into reinforced concrete. The most popular spider manufacturer is Toly.
To hang the hooks and fix the modular picture correctly, you need to proceed in stages:
- We do the markup.
- We put the hooks in the right place, calculating the location of the loop so that the frame covers the studs.
- Gently hammer them in with a hammer, without exerting effort so as not to damage the plastic part.
The spiders can hold up to 10 kg and leave almost no traces when removed.

Smart retainer
A mount for modular paintings, which is often shown in advertisements, but does not meet all the stated characteristics.
According to user reviews, the fastener does not even hold small posters, although the manufacturer guarantees that the fastener is able to hold an object weighing up to 2 kg. We do not recommend gluing pictures to wallpaper and wood: it is preferable to use smooth surfaces.
To decorate an apartment with a painting, you need to choose a composition that is in harmony with the interior, and correctly place it in relation to the furniture, attaching it in any suitable way.
