Style features
Most people understand modern in different ways, believing that if the style of the interior is not classic, then by default it becomes "modern", that is, modern. But the catch is that this trend originated in the 19th century, and the popular trends at that time were significantly different from the current ones. To avoid confusion, we will consider the traditional concept of modernity and try to figure out what is characteristic of it today:
- The interior is characterized by smooth lines, curves and asymmetry.
- Nature had a huge influence on the followers of Art Nouveau: the design contains floristic themes, floral patterns and animal ornaments.
- The priority is to use natural materials - this applies to both decoration and furniture with textiles.
- This style can be called architectural - arches, vaults and tall windows will perfectly fit into such an interior.
- For all its decorativeness, Art Nouveau, having undergone some changes, remains functional.
Color spectrum
Modern in the interior of the bedroom is distinguished by a neutral, calm palette. Used brown, peach, creamy tones. White and gray are not excluded. Soft, subtle shades visually expand the space and help convey the flexibility of the lines.
The bedroom should be designed in tones that calm and tune in to sleep. Bright shades are rarely used here: only as subtle strokes.
The colors used should be in harmony with each other, not contradict or stand out from the general range of the bedroom. Shades of black are appropriate, giving the Art Nouveau magical notes, ash blue and muted green tones. They should smoothly flow into one another, forming contrasts only occasionally. A small room should be decorated in cream and wood tones.
Materials and finishes
Textured surfaces are practically absent in Art Nouveau: it is impossible to find rough brick or concrete here. The walls are evenly painted in soothing colors, serving as a neutral background for furniture and decor. It is not necessary to choose a single color: they can be combined, highlighting a particular area. Sometimes the walls are clad with wood paneling in light natural colors.
An unobtrusive floral ornament is also acceptable, therefore, sometimes wallpaper with a pattern is used to decorate a bedroom in the Art Nouveau style. But plastic, an abundance of metal and ceramics should be avoided. The same applies to ceilings - they should serve as a decoration for the bedroom, therefore, stucco molding is actively used in Art Nouveau, as well as streamlined bunk structures.
The bedroom floor should not become an accent of the interior, therefore, a high-quality laminate like wood or parquet is used as the flooring. The shade of the floor should harmoniously fit into the setting, so it is chosen a few tones darker than the walls, or, on the contrary, merges with them.
Linoleum, as an unnatural material, is difficult to fit into a traditional bedroom setting.
Selection of furniture
Remembering that decorativeness in the Art Nouveau style is closely intertwined with functionality, it is worth choosing furniture of a fancy shape with curly elements, not devoid of convenience. It is better if the bed and the rest of the suite are made of the same wood species, especially if the headboard is carved or curved. However, this recommendation can be omitted if the bed is chosen with a soft headboard. On either side of the bed, there are usually low bedside tables.
The space of the room is not cluttered with furniture, therefore, following the principles of modernity, even a small bedroom looks more spacious. The design, striving for smooth lines, visually unites all the elements, adding them to a harmonious composition.
In the Art Nouveau style, not only natural wood is appreciated, but also glass: it can be a bedside table, cabinet facades, mirrors. An interesting solution is the stained glass inserts on the windows and doors. The metal is not used as actively, but it is present as additional elements.
The cabinet, as a rule, is chosen bulky and placed in the far corner of the room. Its facades can be decorated with floral ornaments.
Lighting
The choice of material for Art Nouveau lighting fixtures is not so important - their decorative and utilitarian functions are in the first place. The shape of the fixtures should work to maintain the style of the bedroom. Products made of porcelain, metal, glass or wood are suitable.
In addition to practical spotlights, elegant ornate chandeliers and wall sconces with soft diffusing light are used in the bedroom. Table lamps with shades and floor lamps are appropriate.
Textiles and decor
Modern bedroom design does not imply a large amount of textiles. Curtains, bedspreads and pillows are selected only practical, from natural dense fabrics.
The shades of curtains and carpet that decorate the floor are not much different from the environment and are not an accent. In the design of textiles, laconic and flowing patterns are welcome.
Art Nouveau bedroom accessories are chosen as carefully as the entire environment. Elegant vases made of glass or gold-plated, paintings depicting girls or nature, rounded and carved frames for mirrors are popular.
