Mechanisms for chair-beds differ in the degree of reliability and ease of use. Some of them are intended for daily use, some are for unfolding only from time to time. In addition, how smooth the sleeping surface will be depends on the mechanism for the chair-bed. This is especially important if the furniture will be used as a permanent bed for one of the family members. The smoother the surface of the unfolded chair, the better the conditions for sleeping, the stronger and healthier it will be.
Advice: If the chair bed is used on a daily basis, it is recommended to purchase a dedicated mattress for sofas (topper). It evens out the surface of the chair-bed, smooths out irregularities and joints, prolongs the service life, and also makes the chair-bed orthopedic properties.
Accordion mechanism
Unfolded products equipped with this mechanism form the most suitable surface for healthy sleep. It is quite even, no gaps between individual parts and height differences are observed. You can find on sale both models with armrests and without them - the latter have a greater width with the same overall dimensions, which is important for small apartments.
The armchair is assembled like an "accordion" - two of three parts, the headboard and the middle, rise and fold together, touching the bases and forming the back, and the foot remains in a horizontal position. As a result, the backrest is very wide, especially if the berth has orthopedic filling.
Draw-out mechanism
When folding, the seat base is pulled towards itself, while additional sections are extended. The seat is turned over, getting a fairly flat berth.
The main disadvantage is the presence of gaps between the individual parts of the mattress. Another feature is the low bed height, usually it does not exceed 25-30 cm, which can be inconvenient for tall people as well as the elderly.
Dolphin armchair-bed
A part of the berth "emerges" from under the seat and is installed at the same height as the main seat.
To install the mechanism itself, a large space is required, therefore, in armchairs equipped with a "dolphin", there is usually no additional box for bed linen. There are slots in the berth, which is a minus of these models. The height of the bed is standard.
Tick-tock (Eurobook)
The mechanism of transformation of the chair-bed "tick-tock" works as follows: when the seat is extended, the back of the chair is turned over and lowered - this design allows you to place the model with virtually no gap with the wall, which saves space.
Models of the “walking eurobook” type do not slip on the floor, which allows not to damage the floor covering.
The variety of models is not limited to the listed options, and below we will consider several more popular mechanisms:
Cot
In models with a folding chair-bed mechanism, the berth is obtained from under the main seat. It consists of a frame on which lamellas are fixed. It is one of the best mattress bases as it has orthopedic properties. A mattress of increased rigidity, having a significant thickness, is laid on top of the lamellas. There is no laundry box in such models, there is no place for it.
Click-gag mechanism
This mechanism for transforming the chair-bed allows you to get a surface of four separate parts. Usually, mattresses are used in the manufacture, which can be folded - when laid out, a rather comfortable bed is obtained.
If the model is made of separate parts, you will have to sleep on four abutting surfaces, which is inconvenient. The problem can be solved by using a mattress topper. A significant drawback of the "click-clack" mechanism for armchairs is a small berth, usually no more than 140 * 140 cm.
Of all the listed options for daily use as the main sleeping place, the "accordion" can be considered the best. In addition to the fact that the berth is flat and comfortable, of standard height and without cracks, this mechanism is also the easiest to unfold. Only a click-blot from a whole mattress, folding along four lines, can compete with it.
