Interior design features
- Usually, arches are used to decorate the interior doorway to the living room, dining room or kitchen.
- In rooms with an area of more than 50 sq. meters the arched enfilade will look picturesque.
- If privacy is required from time to time, doors with stained glass inserts can be built into the arched opening.
- For wall decor, wooden false arches are often used, framing a mirror or fresco. If you choose the right location of the mirror or the plot of the picture, you can create the illusion of endless space.
- There is another option for a decorative arch: a niche in the wall along the contour is decorated with platbands or a wooden molding.
- For the manufacture of arches, wood of various values is taken. Oak, due to its strength and beauty of texture, is ideal for wooden arches. Ash is inferior in hardness to oak, but at the same time it is easier to carve and polishes well. Unfortunately, due to the price, not everyone has access to decor from noble wood species. Budget pine and linden are not so prestigious and durable, but with the help of toning, you can imitate the color and texture of expensive wood.
Types of wooden arches
Any wooden arch consists of a vault, side elements and uprights. Due to the curved shape of the vault, the arches can withstand heavy loads. The choice of the type of arch depends on the interior design, the height of the ceilings, and the zoning of the room.
Classic
Classic wooden arches have the shape of a top in the form of a regular semicircle. That is, the radius of the vault is equal to half the width of the interior opening. This type is suitable for rooms with a ceiling height of more than 2.5 meters. Often the top point of a classic arch is decorated with a figured element.
Ellipse
The ellipse arch is the "little sister" of the classic arch. Ellipse translated from Greek means "omission". The radius of the vault must be greater than half the width of the opening. These wooden arches are ideal for typical apartments because they are installed with ceilings below 2.5 meters.
Romance
The romantic arch is suitable for low wide openings. It has a straight line of the arch, which is smoothly rounded at the edges. Such arches are installed after dismantling double doors.
Portal
Arch-portal is mounted in doorways of standard rectangular shape. For minimalistic interiors, designers choose unadorned wooden portals. A carved wooden portal looks status and will emphasize the respectability of an office or a country house.
Transom
A transom arch is a sash with transparent, frosted or stained glass inserts. It is placed above the portal or above the door to create a beautiful arched vault.Since the transom transmits sunlight, it makes sense to install such an arch at the entrance to darkened rooms.
Rocker
The rocker arch is universal for both narrow and wide openings. The arch of the arch smoothly turns into straight lines parallel to the floor. Thanks to its laconic form, it organically looks in the strict Victorian interior.
Trapezoid
The trapezium arch, as its name implies, has a trapezoidal vault. Often installed in country-style interiors or chalets.
Design options for arches made of wood
Wood is a plastic natural material that lends itself to various processing methods.
Carved
Carving is the most ancient way of artistic woodworking. Wooden arches are decorated with openwork (slotted) or "dull" (overhead, relief) carving.
- Openwork carving will visually facilitate the arched structure and, as the designers say, "add air" to the interior.
- Embossed carving will emphasize the beauty of the solid wood.
- Arched columns and capitals are decorated with blind carvings.
On CNC milling machines, woodcarving of any complexity and design is made. If finances permit, you can order a wooden arch with handmade author's carving.
Backlit
The backlighting of the arched opening will visually expand the passage, focusing on the skillful carving, the beautiful texture of the wood. Directional spot lighting is installed on the inner side of the vault. The sconces inside the arch look elegant; such a design solution is suitable for a wide aisle.
Antique
The "semi-antique" decorative effect is achieved by special methods of processing wood products. Brushing removes soft wood grain to simulate the texture of old wood. Other techniques of vintage decor are multi-layer staining, patina and scuffs, sometimes craquelure is used. This technique is often found in Provence styling. Recently, designers have been experimenting with old barn boards, a rectangular or trapezoidal arch made of such boards will remind of saloons in the Wild West.
Bent tree
Bending wood is a complex technological process, bent parts made of natural wood are much stronger than prefabricated elements. Using this technology, it is possible to create complex fantasy designs of wooden arches.
With stained glass
Stained-glass wooden arches are so decorative that they make it possible to do without additional design delights. To create stained glass windows, stained glass and varnishes are used. Nowadays, in addition to traditional techniques, they use sandblasting of glass, photo printing, color films, fusing (baking).
Combination of wood and stone
Wood and natural stone are the first building materials that people began to use. After a century of plastic, natural wood in the design of a house or apartment is at the peak of its popularity. Combination options in an arched structure of wood and stone depend only on the imagination of the designer.
Arches colors
The color of the wooden arch is selected either to match the main palette of the interior, or in contrast to it.
- A white arch with carved pilasters will decorate the interior in the palace style.
- Brown wooden arches are typical of classic English interiors.
- Beige is "friendly" with most colors and has hundreds of shades. The beige arch will easily fit into both Provence and modern interiors.
Chocolate brown wenge looks very stylish, an arch made of this dark African wood will look spectacular against the background of light walls.
Photos in the interior of the rooms
The arch can be installed in the interior aisle, inside the room itself, or to highlight the balcony area.
Kitchen
Replacing a door with an arch is often found in small kitchens to save space. In this case, a good hood is needed over the stove, otherwise the kitchen smells will spread throughout all rooms. For harmony in the interior, the arch should match the style of the kitchen set.
Hallway and corridor
The arch makes the dark hallway brighter, letting in sunlight from other rooms. A long and narrow corridor will become more interesting if you install a series of identical arches like a suite.
Hall
The spacious living room can be divided by a wide wooden beam arch, making room for a dining room or library. In the living room, false arches framing a mirror, a fresco, and a tapestry look beautiful.
Balcony
The arch will visually unite the balcony or loggia with the main room. A bar counter is often mounted next to the balcony arch in the kitchen. On the balcony itself, you can put a corner sofa and a table.
Room decoration in various styles
Classic interiors are combined with arches of the correct symmetrical shape. If straight horizontal and vertical lines prevail in the interior, it is better to choose a portal arch; for interiors with smooth geometry, wooden arches with a round and oval vault are suitable. It is difficult to imagine a classic arch without columns, pilasters and carved capitals.
The Art Nouveau style is recognizable by the flowing, whimsical lines of the pattern. A wooden arch in the Art Nouveau style is often decorated with wrought iron elements, stained glass windows, painting with lilies and orchids. Provence is distinguished by modesty and pastel, like faded colors. For this style, it is better to choose a rocker arch with an unpretentious ornament and an aging effect.
Oriental style is synonymous with luxury and lush decor. Traditionally in the East, wooden arches were decorated with rich carvings, mosaics, and paintings. Oriental-style wooden arches are characterized by a pointed vault.
