Selection recommendations
A solid wood worktop is not a cheap pleasure, so you should take your upcoming purchase seriously:
- Decide on the type of wood... Which wooden tabletop is more practical, let's talk further.
- Inspect Your Kitchen Countertop Before Purchasing... The surface should be smooth, without grooves, bumps, notches and, moreover, cracks.
- Check humidity... If the tabletop has not yet been treated with anything, we advise you to make sure that the wood has dried properly. The maximum figure is 10-12%, if more - over time, the board may bend. Conscientious manufacturers have a special device that shows humidity.
Important! Stacked tabletops are less prone to bending than solid layers.
- Take a closer look at the pattern... Do you like the texture of natural wood? Wooden countertops are usually not painted, so natural ornamentation should be appropriate.
pros
Natural wood countertops have many positive qualities:
- Environmental friendliness... Unlike chipboard or other particle boards, oak or other wood is completely safe: no glue, resins or other substances are used in its production.
- Texture... How not to find two identical fingerprints, and not to find identical patterns on the cuts. You can be sure: your worktop is unique!
- Ease of processing... For users, this means that you can make a wooden countertop of any size and shape. Cuts, milling are also available.
- Upgradeability... If you scratch your laminate surface, you can only replace it with a new one. Wood is easy to sand, wax again and will last for many more years! By the way, the shade of the coating is also easy to change with the help of processing: a light pine tree can be turned into a dark walnut in just one movement.
Important! Over the years, the tree only gets better: it gains character, density and strength accumulates.
Minuses
Solid wood countertops have several disadvantages:
- Difficult care... Everything is relative, but if the chipboard is easy enough to wipe with a cloth, then the wood coating should be renewed every few months: wax or oil is scrubbed out and evaporated during operation. The exception is varnish, but scratches are formed on it.
- High price... And again, everything is relative: compared to "artificial" materials, wood is not cheap, but it will also serve you much longer. But it is 2 times cheaper than a stone.
Which tree is better to make?
When choosing a type of wood, you should remember one axiom: the more durable and stronger the array, the higher its cost.
The standard is considered oak or beech - these trees are one of the most reliable, but at the same time the most expensive. But investing now, you can be sure that for at least 20-25 years the replacement of the wooden countertop will not be necessary.
Shields of ash are a little cheaper, but in their characteristics they are in no way inferior to noble oak. The only thing to consider is the extremely high density and, as a result, the complexity of processing. Therefore, ash countertops usually have the simplest possible shapes without patterns.
The most budgetary solutions - pine, birch... Unfortunately, their life expectancy is also the shortest. In addition, pine is too soft, which means it will not be difficult to damage the surface. Birch, in turn, actively reacts to any changes: from changes in temperatures, high humidity and even bright lighting, it can go cracks and flaws.
The middle price segment and a great alternative to the previous two - larch... It is not afraid of changes in temperature and humidity, it has a high density. Bonus: the wood contains a natural antiseptic that protects the wood from decay and mold.
Which apron is right for you?
Wood-like countertops for the kitchen are ideally combined with white, so the protective coating is above working area often choose snow-white. It will look great hog tile, hexagons, white brick covered with glass, ordinary square tiles of any size.
When ceramics - not an option, they will come to the rescue. Preferably, plain and light. Or a deep, rich shade.
If this combination seems boring, take a closer look at the stone. Both materials are natural, so it's easy to make friends with each other. Marble, slate, quartz look appropriate.
Colored tiles are for those who like bold solutions. Plain color or with a pattern (for example, oriental ornament) attracts attention and is an accent in the interior. Plus, it's easy to look after her.
Execution apron depends not only on the combination with a wooden tabletop, but also on the style direction: for example, in loft style, red will look harmonious brick, but the glossy hog will not fit at all.
Which headset will look better?
To begin with, the style of the headset does not matter at all: the wood is in perfect harmony with both classic milled facades and ultra-modern matte facades. without handles.
Wooden kitchen countertops can usually be found on white or light colored furniture. Together with a white apron, it becomes a bright spot, attracts attention, adds the lack of warmth and comfort to the kitchen.
Black or graphite matches wood just as well: especially in the case of dark walls. But this combination is not suitable for all styles and sizes - small kitchen black will do even less.
Oddly enough, colored cabinets are also in perfect harmony with wood. You can often find a variant of rich blue facades, wood flooring and white walls.
Green looks no less impressive. Although Red loses, with the right approach, you will be able to get a beautiful set.
How to care?
So that you do not have to spend a lot of effort on caring for a solid wood worktop, follow the recommendations for working on it every day:
- Use cutting boards... Yes, scratches can be sanded off, but it is better not to leave them initially.
- Do not place hot dishes... More precisely - only on the stand, stains may remain.
- Wipe up the water in time... This is especially true for worktops without a varnish coating: the surface will darken from prolonged contact with moisture.
- Wipe down the table often... Did you pour some tea? Wipe clean. Finished cooking? Wipe clean. This simple action will save energy in the future.
As for direct care, it all depends on the impregnation of the wood. The varnish will last more than one year, it is easier to care for it, but the appearance is less aesthetic. Wax or oil is less durable and will have to be reapplied every 6-12 months. But at the same time, the tabletop, covered with oil, looks better and is generally considered more environmentally friendly.
Important! Do not use aggressive and abrasive products in the care - it is advisable to limit yourself to a soft sponge and soapy water.
Design options
The simplest and most modern look of any countertop in the work area is clear, straight lines. If this design seems too rough to you, the front ends can be rounded off.
Milling is also used on the front and open side ends - it can repeat the pattern on the facade, thereby merging with it.
Advice! Don't skimp and order the countertop with the side ends in mind - the closed sides give the kitchen a complete look.
In addition to decorative cuts, there are also quite functional ones: for example, it is logical to make a small bevel and ribs near the sink so that water from the washed dishes or products flows back into the sink.
