Pros and cons
The facades with glass for the kitchen have a lot advantages:
- Suitable for small spaces... Doors with transparent or frosted glass look much lighter than the same deaf ones, literally expanding the space.
- Fits into any styles... Glass fronts in a chic wooden frame with gilding can be used in classic design, kitchens made of glass and metal - the embodiment high-tech style, designs without complex decorations are suitable for modern, Scandinavian interiors.
- Acting as a showcase... It's a shame if beautiful holiday dishes are gathering dust on mezzanine or in closed cabinets - put it behind glass to be able to admire the aesthetics every day.
- Easy to care for... Unlike the dark glossy or any matte kitchen, glass is easier to clean - use a mirror cleaner or wipe with a normal, clean, damp cloth.
disadvantages glass fronts for the kitchen:
- Are more expensive than deaf MDF... The high cost of a kitchen is a relative concept, but one way or another, the presence of glass facades increases the price of a kitchen set.
- Some glass can break on impact... Fragility is inherent only in ordinary glass, tempered or triplex are not afraid of this.
- Get dirty quickly... Fingerprints, greasy marks and other marks remain on the surface. But, as already mentioned, glass inserts are easy to clean.
- Demonstrate a mess... The glass will reveal what is hidden: therefore, the drawers must be tidy and beautiful, otherwise the kitchen will feel cluttered.
If, having appreciated the advantages and disadvantages, you decided on transparent kitchen facades, it's time to decide on the option of inserts.
What types are there?
Glasses for kitchen facades differ in appearance, characteristics, price.
Laminated
The biggest problem standard silicate glasses - fragility. They break easily, and when they break, they fly into sharp parts, which can seriously injure yourself.
To avoid this kind of trouble on the territory of the kitchen, the manufacturers have come up with an interesting solution: the glass is sealed in plastic, or rather - the thinnest film. If such a glass façade is shattered, the film will keep the shards from falling apart. Lightness and other characteristics are preserved.
Tempered
Manufacturing technology is based on exposure to high temperatures, as a result of which the characteristics of glass products change. Tempering develops resistance to high temperatures and their drops, it is possible to break durable glass, although this is already more difficult to do.
Unlike ordinary ones, hardened beats into small particles with rounded edges (another processing result) - this is safer.
Triplex
Several thinnest layers are reliably glued together with a film, creating a weighty multilayer material. Thanks to the film high strength is achieved: it is almost impossible to break up a triplex. On impact, the same thing happens as happens when a small stone flies into the windshield of a car: a network of cracks will disperse from the place of impact.
A quality solution is expensive, therefore, its use in glass facades for the kitchen is justified only in frameless structures.
Acrylic
The modern analogue of glass is extrusion or plexiglass, popularly acrylic. Looks no worse than usual, does not beat, weighs less, does not emit harmful substances.
But there is one big "but" for the kitchen: the maximum temperature that acrylic can withstand is 80C. That is, the use of upper modules with inserts above the gas stove, for example, is prohibited. But above the worktop, the furniture will live for many years.
Whichever insert option you choose, a suitable design will come in handy. Facades with glass for the kitchen are of 2 types.
Framework
The framed facades clearly show the familiar combination of wood and glass. In fact, the doors look like windows: glass is inserted into a wooden frame, fixed with special fittings or an aluminum profile.
This solution is standard for the kitchen., classic. It is chosen for art deco, scandi, provence, country style kitchens. It makes no difference what the set is made of: natural wood, painted MDF, films - glass parts look appropriate everywhere.
Frameless
As the name implies, this design has no framing. The basis is taken from dense triplex or thick tempered glass according to the size of the facade, fixed on hinges, equipped with a handle. The whole door is glass. The unusual effect looks weightless, suitable for high-tech, modern, minimalism.
Important! Frameless structures are necessarily equipped with fittings with rubber or plastic tips so that nothing could damage or scratch the glass.
How can you decorate facades?
Do transparent glass pieces in an aluminum profile seem boring? Choose one of the original decor options.
- Color... Yellow, blue, red, green - in production they can make glass parts of any shade! To achieve uniform coloring, the desired pigment is added to the liquid mass. At home, ordinary color film will help out.
- Texture... To show only the silhouettes of objects inside, when ordering furniture, specify matte, not glossy glass elements. There are several methods of matting: sandblasting, chemical, temperature, paint and varnish. Only a part can be matte - the shape or pattern is applied with a special gun.
- Toning... Another way to keep the airiness, but hide the insides of the boxes. You can easily apply gray, black or mirror films yourself.
- Relief... Waves, lattice, krizet, floodplain, delta, screen and other textures also erode the contents of the cabinets, but retain the lightness of the structure.
- Stained glass... Previously, the image was assembled from pieces like a puzzle. Today, instead of an expensive original, you can order a high quality imitation - drawing with stained glass paints.
- Photo printing... Any motif can be printed on the surface! The service is not cheap, but as a result you will get a unique design that does not fade in the sun and is not afraid of water. The main thing when choosing a drawing is to be aware that it will last for a long time: otherwise, if in a couple of years the motives go out of fashion, the facades will have to be changed.
Design options
In addition to the factory methods of "pumping" glass facades, there are options that can be done at home.
- Lighting... Glass benefits from the right lighting, and it will be easier to find something in the cabinets.
- Painting... Do you have an artistic talent? A brush and paints or glass markers will help you turn ordinary glass doors into works of art.
- Stickers... In December, you can glue snowflakes, in spring - large and small flowers. In this way, the kitchen will be transformed along with nature.
