Even the most basic space can be decorated to resemble an oceanfront bungalow or a yacht cabin. Moreover, this does not require colossal costs, just a few well-chosen accessories are enough to let the freshness of the breeze and the splash of the waves into your kitchen.
Color solution
The tones that are used to decorate the kitchen in a nautical style should be close to natural. Nothing too bright and deliberate. The main ones are the colors of the sea, sand, sky, clouds, calm tones of greenery.
Additional benefit: all these colors, especially in the light version, will help expand the space, and have a calming effect.
Blue tones and aqua tones are considered cold, so they are best suited for a kitchen facing south.
Finishing
The marine interior of the kitchen, as a rule, does not require complex technical solutions.
- Floor
Usually, ordinary boards are laid on the floor, better aged, so that they resemble the deck of an old ship.
But if you show invention and imagination, the floors can be turned into a unique interior decoration. To do this, you need to make niches in the floor, and build mini-compositions on a marine theme in them.
For compositions, you can use pebbles, sea sand, corals, shells, shells, small decorative anchors and chains. From above, each niche is closed with extra strong glass. It looks especially impressive if backlighting is provided in each of the niches.
- Walls
The walls can be finished with wood, giving the impression that you are in a cabin, or covered with bleached plaster, as is the case on the seaside.
A nautical kitchen design can be created by laying out a mosaic panel depicting a sailboat or scenes from underwater life.
- Ceiling
The ceiling can also be finished with wood-like panels, and is equipped with decorative beams, between which ropes, fishing nets or anchor chains are stretched. A chandelier-lantern in a ship's style can hang from the ceiling on the anchor chain.
Furniture
For the chosen style, slightly rough wooden furniture, unpainted and slightly aged, is suitable. It should not shine, on the contrary - dullness will indicate the patina of time, so appreciated by interior designers.
Wicker furniture will also look good, as well as baskets made of willow twigs. An ottoman made of a thick rope twisted into a “coil” can become a very stylish decoration of the kitchen. A similar "coil", only higher, can form the basis for the glass table top of the dining table.
Accessories and decor
Natural materials are predominantly used in nautical kitchen design, as well as glass and brass. Jute and sisal panels and coverings also come in handy.
- The seaside interior of the kitchen will help you create shells brought from your vacation, dried starfish, pebbles from your favorite beach and other items that you found in the sea or picked up on the shore while on vacation. Place them on an open or glass shelf in your kitchen cabinet so they are visible.
- Large sinks can be placed in decorative niches or on window sills.
- Marine kitchen design will help to create small pebbles, shells peeled to mother-of-pearl, small pieces of blue tiles - they can be beautifully laid on ordinary standard facades of an old kitchen, immediately transforming it.
- Small shells come in handy in order to decorate frames for mirrors or photographs, or even lay out a small panel in a nautical style.
- You can put a model of a yacht or a ship on the table, place a round-shaped mirror in a brass frame on the wall - let it resemble a porthole in a cabin.
- Various “marine” items - binoculars, sextants, telescopes, compasses, rope pieces or ropes rolled into a bay will serve as wonderful decorative elements for a marine style kitchen.
- You can add the romance of the sea in more simple ways - by changing the dishes. White plates with blue rims, or blue with white ones will remind sailor collars and vests.
- Blue dishes, especially decorated with images of fish and sea animals, immediately create a certain mood. This option is especially suitable for those who strive for a healthy diet and limit themselves to food: the blue color of the dishes reduces appetite.
- The marine interior of the kitchen will be logically complemented by blinds made of bamboo or light wood. Curtains on the windows can resemble sails - rough unbleached linen in this case will do just fine.
- Small curtains in blue with a simple white pattern will add a homey feel.
- You can divide the zones in the kitchen with the help of decorative curtains made of long threads, on which shells are collected, large beads resembling pearls, pieces of cork or wood polished by the sea.
- Of the fabrics, linen and cotton are preferred, either unpainted or blue-gray, with a rough canvas weave. Sofa cushions made from these materials can be decorated with nautical symbols, images of ships, or simple geometric patterns in blue and white tones.
