Recommendations for creating
A multi-level flower bed, as the name implies, is located not flat horizontally, but vertically, and consists of several floors. With its help, you can plant more flowers in a limited area, create a bright high accent.
To make the multi-level flower bed on the site look harmonious, adhere to the following rules:
- The size of the composition should be commensurate with the dimensions of the suburban area. On a small one, for example, it is better to place several small ones than one bulky one. And on the big one, on the contrary, the tiny ones will be lost from sight.
- Plants with large leaves and buds are located on the lower tier. The taller the flowers, the smaller they should be.
- On one floor of a multi-tiered flower garden, seedlings of the same size are used.
- The height of the long-tiered flower bed should be such that you can easily loosen the soil, transplant shoots, and water.
- A multi-level flower bed in the country can be located anywhere, the main thing is that it does not get lost in the background. Place it near the house, in front of the lawn, near the fence.
- If the design provides for water to drain from the upper tiers to the lower ones, plant the most moisture-loving flowers down.
- A harmonious color combination is easiest to collect from 2-3 colors and their shades. Lovers of minimalism will love the monochromatic white multi-tiered flower beds.
What flowers and plants can you plant?
The choice of flower seedlings depends primarily on your personal taste: someone likes decorative leafy decor, someone loves lush small inflorescences, someone large. But professional designers have secrets to listen to.
To size:
- Small flower bed. You should not plant many different types, it is better to stop at 1-2, but choose a rich color scheme. Petunia, viola, periwinkle, geranium, Turkish carnation will do.
- Large multi-tiered flower garden. In a flower bed made of stone, about a meter in size and more, plant a mixborder. It may include: lupins, meadowsweet, cornflowers, brunners, astilbe, cootules, stonecrops. Dilute the riot with deciduous shrubs for fancy haircuts.
By color:
Most species have many shades, so finding the right ones is not difficult. Win-win combinations:
- purple with yellow;
- blue with pink;
- green with red.
Choose a palette that suits your mood:
- White is pure, romantic. Gives a sense of peace.
- Yellow is bright, festive. Will revive the boring landscape.
- Pink is gentle, light. Will create a dreamy atmosphere.
- Blue is relaxing. It will help your eyes rest.
By tiers:
- Upper. Low decorative, with small inflorescences: marigolds, lilies of the valley, muscari, scilla. Or ground cover - umbilical, sedum, gerbil, periwinkle.
- Middle. If yours is not two-tier, but three-tier or even four, in the middle you need to plant something small, but with more or less large buds. Tulips, crocuses, daffodils, petunias, geraniums, hosts will do.
- Lower. We have already mentioned that large and moisture-loving plants are removed to the very bottom.Geranium, iris, marigold, lily.
Bloom season:
- May June. Violet, carnation, iris, kupena, peony, primrose, phlox.
- June July. Verbena, morning glory, lavender, marigolds, petunia.
- July August. Asters, gladioli, dahlias, cannes.
- Aug. Sept. Chrysanthemums, dahlias, heather, hydrangea.
What materials can you make?
Making a multi-tiered flower bed with your own hands is actually not difficult, the first step is to decide what you are going to create from.
Planks
Wood is an inexpensive material that is easy to process. In addition, it is eco-friendly and goes well with greens. To create a multi-tiered flower bed of boards, the wood must be protected from moisture, rot, and pests. In hardware stores, special impregnations are sold that will help you cope with this.
The simplest construction of boards - several boxes without a bottom of different sizes are stacked on top of each other, with the largest one becoming the lower tier, the smallest one with the top.
But projects can be more original: you can make a pyramid, or give a flower bed a certain shape.
Foam blocks or bricks
Why not make a flower bed out of building blocks, especially if there are surpluses left after work? In addition, when a multi-tiered flower bed is made of the same material as the house, it looks harmonious.
Important! Some foam blocks have large holes inside them - it is convenient to plant flowers in them.
To build a small multi-tiered flower garden, you don't even need cement - the bricks will hold in place under their own weight. If the construction is planned for a large-scale and for centuries, it is better to secure the blocks together with a special compound.
Advice! Flower beds made of stone are no less reliable and aesthetic. You can stack stones on top of each other like bricks, or use gabions.
Tires
Do-it-yourself multi-tiered flower beds are often erected from old tires.
Their main disadvantage is uniformity, so they will have to be stacked in a checkerboard pattern on top of each other. Hence, it becomes necessary to install the bottom, otherwise the whole earth will simply spill out. The bottom is made of plywood, boards and other materials at hand.
Advice! To increase the diameter, cut the tire from above with a grinder or jigsaw.
Ready flower bed
In order not to cut the tree and not collect something from the blocks, organize a multi-tiered flower bed from ready-made pots. To do this, buy 3-5 pots in the store in the same style, but of different sizes and set them on top of each other a little at an angle. The strength of the structure is given by a metal pin, on which the pots are simply put on (it is better that they are plastic).
The option is even simpler - to purchase or order a ready-made structure, you just have to assemble it. Usually they are made from wood, but can be found from metal, ceramics, plastic.
From scrap materials
A multi-tiered flower bed can be made from anything! The main thing is to connect imagination and figure out how to put the details together.
Often a broken clay or ceramic pot is used as a breeding ground - if the bottom is preserved, pour earth into it, and from the fragments collect the steps upward, in which to plant the plants.
Vegetable pallets or crates are an inexpensive but suitable option. They can be used as they are, stacked on top of each other, or disassembled and create the shape you need.
You can also checkout using:
- vines;
- barrels;
- containers made of metal, plastic;
- cans and buckets;
- old furniture (for example, a chest of drawers with open drawers);
- plastic bottles;
- professional sheet.
How to do it yourself?
A multi-tiered flower bed is an easy-to-build structure that even a novice summer resident can handle. The main thing is to have the right tools and materials. We offer the idea of wood decoration.
Instruments
The main thing you need is the boards themselves. Other required materials:
- garden wood protection composition;
- oil, paint or varnish.
Instruments:
- roulette;
- corner ruler;
- sander or block;
- electric jigsaw or hand saw;
- a screwdriver with self-tapping screws, or a hammer and nails.
Step-by-step instruction
The first thing to do is come up with a shape. The easiest option to perform is several squares of different sizes. But the flower bed can be of any shape - rectangular, triangular, round, irregular.
Before buying boards, decide on the depth of the tier - for this you need to estimate the size of the root system of future plants, the larger it is, the higher the sides should be.
To make a multi-tiered flower bed that will last more than one year, the tree must be prepared:
- Saw off pieces of the desired size (for a blooming flower bed made of wooden squares, these can be sets of 4 boards of 100, 60, 30 cm each).
- Sand the surface along the edges and corners.
- Treat with a protective compound according to the instructions, leave to dry completely.
Let's go to the assembly:
- Attach the boards to each other with their ends, collect the squares (or your shape) using self-tapping screws, nails, corners.
- We place the largest part on the prepared soil, fill it with earth to the brim. If you are not on the ground, make a bottom layer of drainage - expanded clay or foam, so that the roots do not rot from abundant watering.
- We put the second largest square, fill in the soil.
- We repeat the third step as many times as you have levels.
The flowerbed is ready! Plants can be planted.
Video instruction
If you don't want to mess around with the assembly for a long time, get a border tape - you can build a flower bed in a couple of hours:
Another equally simple and effective decoration option is from a decorative border. By the same principle, a multi-tiered bed of ordinary brick is assembled.
