Choosing the right location on the site
Choosing the location of the firewood is a serious matter, if you make a mistake with the placement, unpleasant consequences await you:
- firewood will damp;
- have to carry the logs far to the stove or barbecue;
- you will be forced to drag and drop firewood from the machine to the storage location in large quantities.
Take a look features of the site layout.
Based on this, a storage for firewood in a village or garden should be located:
- Convenient for car access... It is advisable to be able to unload near the woodshed for the summer cottage, so that you only have to carefully fold the logs, and not carry them across the entire area.
- Not far from where firewood is used... If your country house has a stove or fireplace that you use regularly, place a supply of firewood against the wall of the house. If there is no stove or you are not using one, move the wood log to the sauna or barbecue area (great if they are located close to each other).
Advice! It is not necessary to be limited to one firewood for a summer cottage; you can keep a compact structure in the house for a small amount of firewood (approximately they should be enough for a day).
- Safe for the firewood itself... The ideal location is a dry, shaded, ventilated area. You should not choose an area directly under the sun for storing firewood, it is better to hide them under a roof and provide good ventilation, let the wood be ventilated. This will keep your logs dry and burning beautifully, and you will avoid problems with starting a fire.
Important! Avoid not only direct sunlight, but also humid lowlands - excessively high humidity will prevent the wood from drying out.
- According to the budget. Oddly enough, but the cost for which you are ready to build a firewood also affects its placement. A free-standing option, for example, will cost more than a wall-mounted one.
What types of structures are there?
Wood logs for summer cottages differ from each other primarily in location: some look like an extension to a house or fence, others exist completely on their own.
In addition to stationary ones, there are also portable structures: they are mostly small and are used inside a house or a bath, as storage of a one-time fuel supply.
By the way, each type has its own name:
- Woodcutter - a free-standing shed for storing logs.
- Woodcutter - a compact canopy against the wall of a house or other building.
- Firebox - a portable basket or other type of small structure often used inside the home.
Woodshed by the fence
This option is usually used as a backup if you cannot attach a woodpile to the structure for some reason. However, this option is quite workable: placed in this way woodshed allows you to use free space and acts as an additional sound absorbing buffer.
See more optionsregistration of an ugly fence.
The fence will serve as the back wall of the structure, you just need to fix the side ones, make the bottom and roof.
Important! An additional advantage of the woodshed by the fence is the unlimited size. You have the opportunity to build a structure even a few meters long.
Wall mounted woodshed
Most often, woodsheds for a summer residence are attached to already erected buildings: a house, a barn, a barn, a bathhouse. This example is justified in the first place convenient location: logs are used in a house or a bathhouse, so it is convenient that the storage of firewood is organized near the burning site.
Choose the northern windy side if the structure is planned to be of a usual type without decor - it is advisable to hide it from prying eyes. A canopy made of polycarbonate, roofing material or slate is attached to the wall of the house from above - it will become a roof. It is advisable to raise the woodpile below the ground, and make supporting walls on the sides that will hold the firewood in place.
Important! Since the back is not ventilated, the side baffles should not be blind - make holes in them for better ventilation.
There are two negative aspects of such a placement, and in particular they threaten buildings that are installed near wooden buildings:
- Risk of fire. The accumulation of a large amount of firewood near the wall of the building cannot be called safe. Therefore, at least near the firewood, you should not have sources of open fire - barbecues, stoves, campfires.
- Reproduction of insects. Stacked logs are an ideal habitat for many small pests. To avoid their penetration into the house, protect the wall with a sheet of metal and treat the structure with insecticidal products.
Important! Consider drainage of water from the roof of the building so that it does not flow onto the firebox during rain or other precipitation, snow melting.
Freestanding wood boxes
Wood logs for summer cottages, located separately from other structures, can become an important part of landscape design and perform additional functions in addition to storage - shading, zoning, decoration.
Take a look ideas for arranging a barn in the country.
The structure is of two types:
- Narrow (~ 50-70 cm deep) wide canopy, blown from all sides. Your woodpipes will always be dry!
- A structure with three ventilated walls, reminiscent of a barn without windows and doors. Here you can equip the storage of the necessary utensils: saws, axes, etc.
The easiest and fastest construction option - 4 supporting pillars, the base 15-25 cm above the ground and the roof. Horizontal boards can be nailed between the vertical beams, leaving 5-10 cm gaps between them for ventilation.
Important! To build a reliable free-standing structure, you will need a foundation, keep this in mind when choosing this type and place for it.
What materials are they made of?
The main building material was and remains wood... Wood is affordable, economical and easy to use, plus it is sustainable and fits perfectly into the landscape. Logs or beams become supports, boards - logs, walls, roof.
The wood does not heat up during operation, so that ideal temperature and humidity conditions are maintained in the wood log, suitable for drying and storing firewood.
The second most popular option is metal... Its main advantage is reliability and fire safety. The metal structure will serve you for more than a dozen years. A frame is made from pipes or a profile, if desired, they are decorated with forged elements.
The roof is covered with polycarbonate, slate. Firewood for summer cottages made of iron can be either free-standing or attached.
Important! It is better not to make walls and a roof from a metal sheet - the metal heats up in the sun, which will lead to overheating and drying out of the logs. This, in turn, will increase fuel consumption.
A combination of wood and metal is often used in construction - the symbiosis is reliable and easy to maintain ideal storage conditions.
How to do it yourself?
Making a wood log yourself is a laborious but interesting process. First of all, before starting work, you need think over and calculate everything:
- Choose the best location.
- Decide on the design of the firewood.
- Estimate the required storage volume and the size of the future woodpile.
- Draw a drawing considering all dimensions.
Now prepare all the necessary instruments:
- a drill or shovel for digging holes for the foundation;
- a hand or electric saw (for a wooden structure), a metal saw for an iron one;
- stepladder for laying the roof;
- a hammer;
- pliers;
- screwdriver or screwdriver for tightening self-tapping screws.
Important! The complete set of tools depends on the selected design type.
Let's go directly to construction:
- Foundation. For a separate logger, this step is mandatory - the presence of the foundation is the guarantor of a long service. Mark out the area, dig holes a little more than the freezing depth and concrete metal posts (you can also fill it with rubble with sand).
- Base. Above the dug-in pillars, a rise is installed in the form of brick or concrete supports. The location of the logs above the ground protects against moisture and promotes better air circulation. On top of the brick or concrete, we fix a wooden frame according to the size of the future structure.
- Walls. Vertical posts are installed starting from the rear and gradually moving to the front.
- Roof. Lay the rafters across; in the future, the roofing material will lie on them.
- Floor. They are made of boards, having previously laid waterproofing under the base using roofing material or other material.
- Roof. Polycarbonate, slate or corrugated board are mounted on pre-installed cross members.
- Walls. Fasten the side strips at intervals while allowing natural ventilation.
- Treatment. Wood is treated with an antiseptic and fire-fighting agent, or varnish. The metal is protected from rust.
Important! In a closed type of wood log, do not forget to separately reinforce the doorway.
If you don't want to waste a lot of time and forces for construction, use pallets:
- Drive 4 or 6 posts in pairs at a distance from each other into one pallet.
- String one pallet for each pair - these are the future walls.
- Fasten 2-3 (depending on the length of the log) pallets at the back - the bottom row of the rear wall.
- Place pallets between the walls as a floor.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 another 1-2 times (depending on the desired height).
- Lay transverse joists for the roof, make a roof.
Advice! Don't have a separate place to organize firewood? Make a niche under the veranda or terrace, first protecting the bottom from moisture.

Beautiful ideas
Unusual and interesting designs for firewood differ primarily in their shape:
- A circle. One of the options not just to create a repository, but to make a real art object is to use a section of a wide pipe. Inside, shelves and partitions can be welded to store different types of wood or types of fuel - logs, brushwood, cones.
- House. The original design in the form of a narrow high house with a gable roof will become part of the landscape. If you make a shelf under the roof, you can store dry branches, an ax and other necessary things in it.
- Rack. The structure is somewhat reminiscent of the design of the well-known KALLAX rack from IKEA - a square or rectangular frame with the same cells.Its advantage is that each cell is suitable for storing different grades or fractions. And individual empty pods can be decorated with flowers or decorative figures.
Advice! To incorporate a woodshed into a landscape, make several small frames and alternate them with a hedge.
In the standard design, you can make shelves: then you can put a flowerpot with flowers between evenly laid logs. This technique is relevant if the firebox is located in a conspicuous place and you need to somehow beat its appearance.

Advice! For the manufacture of a wood log, you can use ready-made items: various barrels, pipes, empty boxes, stacked on top of each other, form a single structure suitable for wood stock.
