What is patina and what features should be taken into account when designing?
The word "patina" comes from the Italian "patina", originally this term denoted a plaque on copper. The green film has a second name - "verdigris". Other metals are also susceptible to patina: iron rusts, silver turns black.
Today, under the patina in interior design artificially aged items are meant - furniture, accessories, finishing details, decor.
The antiquity effect can be:
- Natural... Just what we talked about in the first paragraph - copper greening, rust.
- Artificial... Man-made to highlight the sophistication of detail.
By the material is distinguished:
- Metal... In a kitchen with a patina, it can be aged handles, pipes, faucets.
- Wooden... The effect can be craquelure - when white color is applied to the entire surface or any other color with a cracking effect. Either partial - in this case, the protruding elements age or, conversely, the depressions are made darker.
In the design of kitchens with patina, take into account only one detail: the decor will look exquisite only in a suitable interior and with a well-chosen kitchen set.
That is, classic carved facades using this technique really look more expensive, while modern glossy doors with an aging effect are an absurd picture.
What color is the patina?
To make kitchen furniture look natural, choose natural tones: silver, gold, copper, bronze. They are versatile and can be used in light and dark kitchens. Make metals and wood older.
Combine metal with other textures should be skillfully: Warm brown or beige base (champagne, ivory) highlighted with gold or copper finish. Cold gray, black white kitchen aged with silver.
If the application is supposed to be on a colored base, the easiest way is to choose a color 2-3 shades darker than the original one. Blue patina for blue furniture, brown for beige... An interesting effect is obtained if you play in contrast: a snow-white kitchen with a black patina, blue and red.
Applications
Classic kitchens have 3 main components - a set, dinner Zone, decor. Patina is applied to 1, 2 or all 3 elements: if you need to age all the details, choose a less contrasting effect.
The easiest way to create the right atmosphere in the interior and not to overdo it in the kitchen with a patina - to decorate the kitchen set. Today, manufacturers offer a large selection of ready-made solutions, including luxury and inexpensive options.
If there is already furniture in the kitchen, you can create a patina effect yourself... To do this, it is enough to cover the facades with light paint, then dark, after the layers have dried, sanding the protruding parts. If you want to bright kitchen, act the other way around: dark paint, then opaque light and fine skin.
The second easy way - dry brush. With this method, any shade is applied to the surface from the edges to the center. Don't forget to protect with matte varnish or wax when finished.
Important! Natural wood in the kitchen looks great in a patina of gold, dark types of veneered MDF are better covered with bronze, a light array will sparkle in combination with silver.
You can add coziness to the dining area with an aged table and chairs. In classic kitchens, set and dining furniture are chosen from the same material and in the same color - accordingly, the patina will also be the same.
A lot of the same elements seem boring? Order "reverse patina": that is, the headset, for example, is white with black decor, and the table is black and white.
Less noticeable, but from this no less important nuance - decor... Frames for photographs, picture baguettes, flowerpots are covered with patina. On sale you can find furniture handles, rails, curtains with an aged effect.
By choosing fittings in one color (for example, copper with a green patina), by placing them on an ordinary single-color set, you will still get the effect of a kitchen with a patina - such small, at first glance, details play such a big role.
What styles is it suitable for?
A patina kitchen is a controversial solution for an ultra-modern interior design, but it looks great in retro styles or rustic styles.
Antique kitchen set in provence style — classics of the genre... The scuffs look appropriate and create a special French charm. Since the colors of the furniture are mostly pastel, it is better to fake the effect of antiquity with a white or silver shade.
No less patinated kitchen in boho and shabby chic styles is actual... Both directions imply a semblance of the influence of time, which antique furniture with a gold or silver patina emphasizes perfectly.
IN classic interiors the patina effect is used not to age the set, but as an exquisite decorative coating: kitchen with gold patina look more expensive than plain colors. The same technique is relevant for luxurious trends: Empire, Baroque.
Oddly enough, noble aging is also appropriate in industrial design. True, for the loft style, this is rather a way of creating an oxymoron: a combination of incongruous. The decor is more coarse and limited: you have to choose what exactly will be aged - accessories, dining set, headset facades.
It is impossible not to mention the directions in which patina is definitely inappropriate: first of all, this includes modern styles - high-tech, modern, minimalism. Because most often used for them glossy coatings... Scandinavian cuisine is also not worth aging - it is so full of decorative details, the patina will be superfluous.
Examples in the interior
As practice shows, patinated furniture looks best if it has protrusions or recesses in its structure from the outside. That is, facades with moldings or frames in the aged look look more organic than smooth ones.
To make the effect more noticeable, deeper and more vivid, combine blank cabinet doors with glass (it is better to choose the layout in the color of the decor), lattice. Decorations in the form of decorative strips or balusters, carved baseboards under the ceiling, stained glass painting are appropriate, open shelves with “balconies” typical of classical styles.
In Provencal cuisine, the patina is different - not contour, as in the classics or the Baroque, but dull. That is, it is not individual details, protrusions, recesses that stand out, but the entire facade: the craquelure effect is appropriate, coating with a dry brush.
Buying aged furniture means committing yourself to creating a special atmosphere for it. Choose the appropriate finishing materials for the walls, floor, backsplash, ceiling.Add suitable decorations, including lamps, textiles. Remember the main thing - the patina looks luxurious, which means you cannot interrupt it with something cheap and low-quality.
